Coke + G-Love = Zero?

Apparently there’s still room on the market for yet another Coca-Cola product. Hey, I’m already a huge fan of the C2 (but only in the can), but I’ll give the new Coke Zero a try. Coca-Cola is apparently hoping you will to, and they’ve enlisted G-Love (minus the Special Sauce, apparently) (edit: apparently Special Sauce is in the commercial, they weren’t mentioned in the press releases. Bad Coke! Bad!) to help convince you. Recreating the classic “Teach The World To Sing” commercial, but on a building in G-Love’s hometown of Philly rather than on a sprawling hillside, the updated version of the song will say “I’d like to teach the world to chill, take time to stop and smile / I’d like to buy the world a Coke and chill with it awhile.” Not the most inspiring lyrics when you read them, but it’s all about the delivery and if anyone can pull it off, I’d bet G-Love can.
Oh, and for those of you that haven’[t caught it on the TV yet, Coke’s website has the new Fantastic Four commercial available for viewing. Only available in Media Player and Realplayer formats because someone didn’t get the memo that Quicktime was the best way to go.

I’m just not sure why quicktime is the best way to go? Choices are certainly nice, but quicktime the best way to go? eh

After talking with my buddy who works with video, I may have been a little overzealous with my assertion that QT would work best. Let’s just say that it’s a little less obtrusive since with QT there’s no need to launch an external player, and the embedded players from Real and Windows tend to give me serious hassles. Ergo, I tend not to click on anything other than QT links unless I really, really want to see it.

Stephen Gerding you ass Special Sauce is in the G Love commercial
June 29th, 2005 at 1:04 pm
Um, OK - haven’t caught the commercial yet and the news stories I read didn’t mention Special Sauce at all so I assumed he wasn’t involved. Not sure why that makes me an ass, but hey.

Personally the thought of G Love and/or Special Sauce as Coke toting popstars makes me loose some respect for them. Coke is Satan.

Yeah, first off G love is the man, and coke (whom ever idea it was) is smart for adding him to this product. At first the odd combination of the strait from the streets, smooth-sloppy blues player and the Mega-giant Coke Company don’t jive. But, after a second of thought it all makes sense. G love’s chill music goes best with a bong and what happens after a long session? That right, my only true arch nemesis, dry mouth! (Bastard) Thus the connection is made. Next time I’m mellowing out to some G love and the Dry mouth kicks in, I know I’ll be reaching for a coke. Now, if only Cheetos had that kind of marketing savvy.

I’d like to teeeach the world to not… sell out to compaaanies. *sings*
Yeah, so G. Love has decided to sell out. *cough* I mean chill out. What a load of horseshit Wang. Oh well, guess he got a nice check for that diddy. Shame ^_^ One love people!…

G. Love is great no matter what he does. The fact that he doesn’t mention the band doesn’t mean anything. In previous songs, he’s only mentioned himself, its just their style. “This is G. Love commin’ at you live from california, although i’m philly born…” big deal, he always just goes by himself. The commercial is great… -Special sauce with the special skills, The special find for the special fill- i’ll drink coke because of them.

Did anyone take time to consider that maybe they’re huge fans of Coca-Cola products and wanted to add their own “special” message to promote that? If given the chance to promote a product I grew up drinking AND spotlight myself… duh??? I think that both made a wise choice… who doesn’t know the coke song??? Doesn’t mean I’ll buy the product but I’ve got the song in my head again!

G Love is just another generic watered down “funky” blues player. If he was a friend and playing at a campfire he’s be great, but trying to sell a $13 album? Naw… He actually fits on a Coke commercial: homogenous, non-threatening white boy blues.

Watered down white-boy “funky” blues. Perfect for Coke: homogenous, bland, non-threatening.

Met G. Love (Garrett) this weekend–Special Sauce is the band, not a guy :) Gotta love the commercial.

I’d have to say that it’s pretty stupid for someone to “lose respect” for g. love & ss because they did a coke commercial. That shows no respect for the artist’s accomplishment. Stop acting like a middle schooler who hates it when they’re favorite band goes public.

are you all daft? G.love and special sauce just dropped the name special sauce. the three men are all the same. Hello Mc Fly????
July 13th, 2005 at 1:25 am

Any artist who sells a product that isnt thier art is a whore and should be shot

It was much harder to maintain respect after the selling “Cold Beverage” to Coors.
Newcastle maybe but Coors, never!
July 16th, 2005 at 5:43 am
Why should one be given Shit for selling something that he has probably has been using all his life. I, personaly, have no problem with someone speaking/singing the praises of a product that they actually use. G-Love and the Special Sauce are a fantastic group and I see no problem with them making money where they can– the more money they make doing other projects, the more freedom they have to make the music that they want to play - and thats the music we want to hear

g love doesn’t have the luxury to turn down the shitloads of cash he most definitely received for doing this commercial. musicians that are NOT superDUPER stars need money to keep making music. it doesn’t matter if he likes drinking coke or not. it’d be a different story if his music or he himself specifically condemns globalization, big business, etc. maybe it does. not a big fan myself. he does like cold beverages, right? or something? maybe they paid him in coke.
July 27th, 2005 at 5:51 pm
Actually, the “Special Sauce” are the keepers of Coca-Cola’s secret ingredient that has eluded Pepsi for the last 50 years. That is why they’re in the commercial. G. Love is just fulfilling his Gozer-mandated duties as stipulated in his contract when he joined the band.
July 29th, 2005 at 1:15 am
Well, now we know what he meant when he said he likes cold beverages. Glad I only ever purchased one of his albums. Sell out. Just another cog in the media-entertainment complex.

so fucking this song is so sweet. It is such a stoner commercial. I don’t know anyone other than stoners who use the word chill…so everyone should just shut up and chill out to this song and grab the bong!! Peace and Love!
August 4th, 2005 at 4:37 pm
love the commercial, just not the fact he semi-sold out
August 7th, 2005 at 2:35 pm
G Love is such a piece of s**t for doing this commercial. I hope he loses money in the long-run by doing it. I hope it makes people never buy another one of his albums because it makes them sick to their stomachs to watch that sell-out piece of fecal corn sing about fuggin coke. I used to be a G Love fan. Now I will do my best to boycott him and spread the word about his piece-of-s**t-itude.

If only a song can change the world… yeah right… LOL… Just another way of making tons of $$ for themselves
August 8th, 2005 at 8:10 pm
Those of you whining about G. Love being “a sellout” are crying loser jealous punks. Chill
August 14th, 2005 at 10:48 am

in my humble oppinion. Artist’s who are asked to be featured in Coke commercials (especially) Are by far, the most recognized and revisited artists than any other form of advertisement. what better way to plug the band and the product. Music listeners today have changed from the old rocker attitude of “selling out”
they are actually “cashing in” and some start touring again.
I appreciate G. Love and was applauding his commercial spotlight. Everyone should drink coke and listed to G.love and special sauce.

All you jealous G-Love haters can take a long walk off a short pier. You’re all a bunch of jealous punk biotchiz.
September 19th, 2005 at 2:41 am
all you haters just wish you could sound that good and make that kinda money, if some guy walked up to you and said,” hey, since music is your life, sing a song and drink a coke and we’ll pay you 1.5 mill, sound good?” wtf would you say? if you call yourselves fans of them, why would you ditch them cuz they made a lot of money? maybe they’ll go on tour now =D
